New beginnings: resurrection and a fresh start
Bullinger gives seventeen real weight. His Number in Scripture (ch. "Seventeen") calls it the sum of spiritual perfection (7) and governmental, ordinal perfection (10), reading it as "perfection of spiritual order." He points to Romans 8:35-39, where Paul names seven things that cannot separate a believer from Christ's love and then a further list built around ten items (death, life, angels, principalities, powers, things present, things to come, height, depth, any other creature), and to Hebrews 12:18-24's contrast of what Israel came to at Sinai against what believers have come to in Christ. "Victory" and "overcoming" fit Romans 8's theme loosely but are Bullinger's inference from the arithmetic, not a title Scripture gives the number seventeen itself. The anchors are real; the specific label is interpretive, and thinner than the anchors for 14 or 24.
The mathematics
- The seventh prime. And 17 = 2 + 3 + 5 + 7 — the sum of the first four primes, and the only prime that is the sum of four consecutive primes. (The reason is provable, not accidental: any four consecutive odd primes add to an even number, so the sum can only be odd if it includes 2 — which happens exactly once.)
- A Fermat prime, 2⁴ + 1. In 1796 the nineteen-year-old Gauss proved the regular 17-sided figure can be drawn with compass and straightedge — the first advance on Greek construction in two thousand years, and the discovery that decided him on mathematics. He asked for the shape on his tombstone.
- 17 = 10 + 7: ordinal perfection joined to spiritual perfection, which is precisely Bullinger's reading.

The seventeen-year cicada counts seventeen years in the dark and then emerges in the billions in a single week — a prime-numbered life no predator's cycle can lock onto (Williams & Simon, Annual Review of Entomology 40, 1995).
