The number 7

Completion, divine perfection, spiritual fullness

God's own numbers: unity, completeness, divine order

Seven closes creation week itself: God "rested on the seventh day" once his work was finished (Genesis 2:2-3), and the pattern repeats through Israel's calendar of feasts and years and through Revelation's seven churches, seals and trumpets (Leviticus 23; Revelation 1-16). Naaman washes in the Jordan seven times before he is cleansed (2 Kings 5:14). E. W. Bullinger reads seven as spiritual completeness, drawn from a Hebrew root meaning "to be full," and sets it against six as the divine counterpart to man's number, cataloguing sevenfold patterns from Christ's miracles in John to the golden candlestick's seven lamps. The Sabbath rest is the strongest scriptural anchor; the wider sevenfold cataloguing across the whole Bible is Bullinger's system, built outward from that one strong root.

The mathematics

  1. The fourth prime, and 7 = 3 + 4 — the divine three joined to the earthly four, which is exactly how Bullinger reads its meaning.
  2. The smallest prime whose reciprocal runs the longest possible cycle: 1/7 = 0.142857142857… and 142857 is a cyclic number — multiply it by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 and the same six digits come back in rotation (285714, 428571, 571428, 714285, 857142).
  3. The regular seven-sided figure is the first that cannot be drawn with compass and straightedge alone — a fact not proved until Gauss, more than two thousand years after the Greeks began trying.
  4. The second centred hexagonal number: one at the centre, six around it — the shape a seven-branched lampstand makes when its lamps are counted.

The body keeps a seven-day rhythm of its own. Chronobiology calls them circaseptan — about-seven-day cycles in immune response, hormone excretion and the timing of transplant rejection — first documented by Franz Halberg (Annual Review of Physiology 31, 1969). No one commanded the body to keep a week; it keeps one.

The musical octave spans eight named notes across seven intervals before the whole pattern begins again.

Newton counted seven colours in the light he split with a prism, and named them to the seven tones of the scale — the same number sounding in the ear and shining in the eye (Opticks, 1704).

Sources are named in the line itself. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
