The life
Dr. Robert Charles Sproul (February 13, 1939 – December 14, 2017) was an American Reformed theologian, Christian apologist, Presbyterian pastor (Presbyterian Church in America, PCA), and the founder of Ligonier Ministries (originally Ligonier Valley Study Center, founded 1971 in Western Pennsylvania; later relocated and grew into the global Reformed-teaching ministry).
Educated at Westminster College PA (B.A., 1961), Pittsburgh Theological Seminary (M.Div., 1964), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Drs., 1969), and Whitefield Theological Seminary (Ph.D., 2001). His doctoral work at the Vrije Universiteit was on the philosophy of religion under G.C. Berkouwer. He has been described by The Gospel Coalition and other Reformed-evangelical sources as "the greatest and most influential proponent of the recovery of Reformed theology in the last century."
Ligonier's Renewing Your Mind daily radio broadcast (launched 1994) became one of the most-heard Reformed-theology platforms internationally; the broadcast continues posthumously in Sproul's voice through extensive sermon archive. He chaired the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy (ICBI) and was one of the principal drafters of the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy alongside J.I. Packer. His pastorate at Saint Andrew's Chapel (Sanford, Florida) began 1997 and continued until his death.
His book catalog includes 70+ titles; The Holiness of God (1985) is his signature work.
