James Innell Packer (July 22, 1926 – July 17, 2020) was an English-born Canadian theologian, Anglican priest, and one of the most influential evangelical authors of the 20th century.
The life
James Innell Packer (July 22, 1926 – July 17, 2020) was an English-born Canadian theologian, Anglican priest, and one of the most influential evangelical authors of the 20th century. Educated at Oxford (Corpus Christi, then Wycliffe Hall), he was ordained Anglican in 1952 and earned his D.Phil. on Richard Baxter and the Puritan tradition in 1954. He taught at Tyndale Hall Bristol, Trinity College Bristol, and from 1979 until his death at Regent College, Vancouver.
He served as general editor of the English Standard Version (ESV, 2001) and as a signatory and chief drafter of the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. Knowing God (1973) sold over 1.5 million copies and was named to Christianity Today's "Top 50 Books that Have Shaped Evangelicals." He published over 300 articles and approximately 30 books.
