Both included that portion of the country "from Sihor, which is before Egypt," a small brook near El-Arish, which on the east was the southern boundary of Canaan, to Ekron, the most northerly of the five chief lordships or principalities of the Philistines. 3, 4. also the Avites: From [on] the south--The two clauses are thus connected in the Septuagint and many other versions.

And by great waters - That is, by the abundant-waters, or the overflowing of the Nile. Tyre was the mart to which the superabundant productions of Egypt were borne (see Ezek. 27) The seed of Sihor - There can be no doubt that by Sihor here is meant the river Nile in Egypt (see Jos 13:3; 1Ch 13:5; Jer 2:18). The word שׁחר shichor is derived from שׁחר shachar, to be black Job 30:30, and is given to the Nile from its color when it brings down the slime or mud by which Egypt is rendered so fertile.

And now - What business hast thou there? Sihor - The Nile: it signifies black, called Melas by the Greeks, either from the blackness of the land it passed through, or of the soil it casts up. The waters - Here and by the same words before is meant, to seek help from either place.

Sihor--that is, the black river, in Greek, Melas ("black"), the Nile: so called from the black deposit or soil it leaves after the inundation (Isa 23:3). The Septuagint identifies it with Gihon, one of the rivers of Paradise. the river--Euphrates, called by pre-eminence, the river; figurative for the Assyrian power.
