  1. Numbers 33:35

They set out from Abronah and camped at Ezion-geber.

    Commentary on Numbers 33:351 voice
Ezion-gaber - Dr. Shaw places this port on the western coast of the Elantic gulf of the Red Sea. It is now called Meenah el Dsahab, or the golden port, by the Arabs; because it was from this place that Solomon sent his ships for gold to Ophir, 1Ki 9:26. He supposes it to be about sixty miles distant from Mount Sinai - Travels, p. 322, 4th. edition. Stat. 32.

  2. Numbers 33:36

They set out from Ezion-geber and camped at Kadesh in the Wilderness of Zin.

    Commentary on Numbers 33:361 voice
Zin, which is Kadesh - A place remarkable for the death of Miriam the prophetess, and bringing water out of the rock. As this place was on the borders of Edom, the Israelites, being denied permission to pass through their land, which lay on the direct road to the promised land, were obliged to turn to the right to Mount Hor, now called Accaba by the Arabs. Stat. 33.

  3. Deuteronomy 2:8

So we passed by our brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion-geber, and traveled along the road of the Wilderness of Moab.

    Commentary on Deuteronomy 2:81 voice
Elath (Akaba) is at the northern extremity of the eastern arm of the Red Sea, and gives to that arm the name of the Elanitic Gulf. The name means “trees;” and is still justified by the grove of palm-trees at Akaba.

  4. 1 Kings 9:26

King Solomon also assembled a fleet of ships at Ezion-geber, which is near Eloth in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea.

Commentary on 1 Kings 9:262 voices
And King Solomon made a navy of ships in Eziongeber,.... Which was one of the stations of the Israelites, near the wilderness of Sin, or Paran, Num 33:35, it signifies the backbone of a man; and it is said (w) the ridge of rocks before this port were in that form, covered by the sea at high water, and sticking up with various points in a line when it was low. Josephus says (x) in his time it was called Berenice, which is placed by Mela (y) between the Heroopolitic bay, and the promontory Strobilus, or Pharan.

John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed

A navy of ships - Literally, אני oni, a ship: in the parallel place, 2Ch 8:17, it is said that Hiram sent him אניות oniyoth, ships; but it does not appear that Solomon in this case built more than one ship, and this was manned principally by the Tyrians.

  5. 1 Kings 22:48

Jehoshaphat built ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold, but they never set sail, because they were wrecked at Ezion-geber.

Commentary on 1 Kings 22:481 voice
Ships of Tharshish to go to Ophir for gold - In the parallel place (2Ch 20:36) it is said that Jehoshaphat joined himself to Ahaziah, to make ships to go to Tharshish; and they made the ships in Ezion-geber. Concerning these places, and the voyage thither, see the notes on 1Ki 9:26-28 (note); 1Ki 10:11 (note), 1Ki 10:22 (note). Some translate, instead of ships of Tharshish, ships of burden. See Houbigant, who expresses himself doubtful as to the meaning of the word.

  6. 2 Chronicles 8:17

Then Solomon went to Ezion-geber and to Eloth on the coast of Edom.

Commentary on 2 Chronicles 8:171 voice
Solomon, determined to cultivate the arts of peace, was sagacious enough to perceive that his kingdom could become great and glorious only by encouraging a spirit of commercial enterprise among his subjects; and, accordingly, with that in mind he made a contract with Huram for ships and seamen to instruct his people in navigation.

  7. 2 Chronicles 20:36

They agreed to make ships to go to Tarshish, and these were built in Ezion-geber.

Commentary on 2 Chronicles 20:362 voices
And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish,.... Of which; see Gill on 1Ki 22:48, and though it is there said, 1Ki 22:49, that Jehoshaphat refused letting the servants of Ahaziah go with his, that was after he had been reproved for joining with him, and after the ships were broken: and they made the ships in Eziongeber; of which see Gill on 1Ki 9:26.

John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed

There is an emphasis laid upon the time-- after this, after God had done such great things for him, without any such scandalous and pernicious confederacies, given him not only victory, but wealth, yet after this to go and join himself with a wicked king was very ungrateful.
