John used the same four keys that Habakkuk did. In Revelation 1:9-11 we find he was in the spirit (stillness), he heard a voice behind him (tuned to spontaneity), saying, "Write in a book (journaling), what you see (vision)."

About this voice
Dr. Mark Virkler is an American Charismatic-evangelical teacher, author, and the co-founder (with his wife Patti Virkler) of Communion with God Ministries (CWG; CWGMinistries.org) and Christian Leadership University (CLU; ChristianLeadershipUniversity.com) — an internet-based Christian-formation institution offering Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral programs. He has taught on hearing God's voice for 25+ years across six continents to substantial international audiences, training pastors and lay believers in the practical methodology. His foundational book Communion with God (1986; later expanded as Dialogue with God and most recently as 4 Keys to Hearing God's Voice with Patti Virkler) systematized what became the "4 Keys to Hearing God's Voice" framework — methodology that has trained substantial numbers of believers globally and shaped subsequent hearing-God-stream voices. He earned a doctorate (Doctor of Practical Ministry) from Vision International University.
