The number 34

Naming of a son, sonship

Bullinger's Number in Scripture has no treatment of thirty-four, and no verse states the number as a symbol of naming a son. The label traces to Ed F. Vallowe's Biblical Mathematics (1998), where the claim rests on a concordance count: that the thirty-fourth time Abraham's name appears in Scripture falls at the naming of Isaac. That kind of occurrence-count argument cannot be verified without a full concordance pass, and it has not been independently checked here. Scripture's plain occurrences of the number (tribal census figures in Numbers 1-2, for instance) show no repeated pattern of their own. This should be flagged to readers as unverified tradition resting on a specific counting claim, not a plain scriptural statement.

The mathematics

  1. 34 = 2 × 17, and the ninth Fibonacci number.
  2. 34 = 3² + 5².
  3. The magic constant of the four-by-four square — including the one Dürer set into the corner of his 1514 engraving Melencolia I, where every row, column and diagonal comes to thirty-four, and the bottom row carries the date.

The same number, in what He made

Count the spirals in a sunflower head and thirty-four comes up again and again — the commonest single count in the largest study ever made of them, where three of every four heads counted out to a Fibonacci number (Swinton & Ochu, Royal Society Open Science 3:160091, 2016). The flower is keeping a sequence it was never taught.

Sources are named in the line itself. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
