The number 26
The Gospel, YHWH
Twenty-six is absent from Bullinger's Number in Scripture; he gives it no chapter. What is genuine and citable is the Hebrew gematria of the divine name YHWH: yod (10) plus he (5) plus vav (6) plus he (5) sums to twenty-six, a real and long-attested rabbinic and kabbalistic datum, not a Bullinger claim or a New Testament one. This is why some lists tie twenty-six to the divine name itself. "The Gospel" as a meaning for twenty-six does not trace to this gematria, to Bullinger, or to any specific verse; it belongs to later derivative number-meaning lists. Where the site displays "YHWH," it rests on a real, checkable Hebrew letter-value sum; where it displays "the Gospel," that half should be held as popular tradition only.
The mathematics
- 26 = 2 × 13.
- It is the only number in all of arithmetic squeezed between a square and a cube: 25 = 5², 27 = 3³, and 26 sits alone between them. Fermat asserted it; Euler proved it.
- Twenty-six is the letter-value of the divine Name, YHWH (10 + 5 + 6 + 5) — a fact about Hebrew letters rather than a property of the number, and worth keeping the two straight.
Every property here was checked before it was printed.
