The number 18

Bondage, oppression, spiritual warfare

E. W. Bullinger's Number in Scripture has no dedicated chapter on eighteen; the number is not part of his treated list. The "bondage, oppression" association nonetheless rests on real, independently verifiable text: Israel served Eglon of Moab eighteen years (Judges 3:14) and was oppressed by Ammon eighteen years (Judges 10:8), and Jesus describes a woman "bound" by a disabling spirit for eighteen years (Luke 13:11, 16) in the same passage that mentions eighteen killed when the tower in Siloam fell (Luke 13:4). These are Scripture's own eighteens, not Bullinger's arithmetic; he simply does not comment on the number. "Oppression" is a fair pattern drawn straight from these texts. "Spiritual warfare" is a reasonable but looser extension from the Luke 13 healing, not a title the text itself gives the number.

The mathematics

  1. The only number that is exactly twice the sum of its own digits: 1 + 8 = 9, and 2 × 9 = 18. Not merely unchecked-so-far but provable — 10a + b = 2(a + b) forces b = 8a, which happens once.
  2. 18 = 2 × 3² = 3² + 3², and it is a Lucas number — the companion sequence running alongside the Fibonacci numbers.
  3. Abundant: its divisors 1 + 2 + 3 + 6 + 9 come to 21, overshooting the number itself.

A water molecule weighs 18 — molecular weight 18.0153 (NIST Chemistry WebBook). The most abundant substance in a human body, and on the surface of the earth, comes to eighteen.

Sources are named in the line itself. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”

What they have said about this number

Life more abundantly — and, in its darker sense, the bondage of sin.
