John Foxe

John Foxe (1516/17 – April 18, 1587) was an English Protestant clergyman, theologian, and historian, principally known for Acts and Monuments of these Latter and Perillous Days, Touching Matters of the Church (1563) — popularly known as Foxe's Book of Martyrs — the foundational English-language Protestant martyrological history.

Foxe was a Marian Exile (fled to the Continent during Queen Mary I's Catholic restoration, 1553–1558) and returned to England under Elizabeth I where he completed and revised the Acts and Monuments across four lifetime editions (1563, 1570, 1576, 1583). The work catalogued Christian martyrs from apostolic times to the 16th century with particular emphasis on the Marian persecutions of English Protestants.

The book was substantially formative for English Protestant identity, was widely owned in Puritan and broader Protestant households for centuries, and remains in continuous print.
