Dallas Willard

Dr. Dallas Albert Willard (September 4, 1935 – May 8, 2013) was an American philosopher, professor, and influential Christian author. Born in Buffalo, Missouri, raised in Southern Baptist context, he served on the faculty of the University of Southern California School of Philosophy for 48 years (1965–2013), retiring as full professor. He was Director of the School of Philosophy from 1982–1985. His academic specialty was phenomenology, particularly the work of Edmund Husserl, whose major writings he was the first to translate into English (*Logical Investigations*, *Philosophy of Arithmetic*). He held a Th.M. from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (1957) and Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin–Madison (1964). His Christian-author career — substantial alongside his philosophical career — produced foundational works in spiritual-formation and discipleship: *In Search of Guidance* (1984; revised as *Hearing God: Developing a Conversational Relationship with God* 1999, expanded 2012), *The Spirit of the Disciplines* (1988), *The Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering Our Hidden Life in God* (1998; *Christianity Today* Book of the Year), *Renovation of the Heart: Putting On the Character of Christ* (2002), *Knowing Christ Today: Why We Can Trust Spiritual Knowledge* (2009), and the posthumously-completed *The Allure of Gentleness: Defending the Faith in the Manner of Jesus* (2015) and *Living in Christ's Presence: Final Words on Heaven and the Kingdom of God* (2014). He was associated with the Renovaré spiritual-formation movement (founded by Richard Foster) as substantial intellectual-and-pastoral resource.
