About this voice
Nik Ripken (pseudonym; the family identity is protected because of ongoing Muslim-context mission and persecuted-church work) is the world's leading research-documenter of persecuted-church experience in Muslim contexts. He and his wife Ruth — originally from rural Kentucky — served as Southern Baptist-affiliated missionaries primarily in North Africa, Somalia, and broader Muslim-context regions across 30+ years. Their early ministry in Somalia included the loss of one of their sons (Tim Ripken, killed in mid-1990s during the Somali civil war period) and substantial firsthand experience of the rapid attrition of the small Somali Christian community (from approximately 150 believers to 4 surviving across the Ripkens' tenure). The family experienced a faith-crisis, left Somalia, and Ripken began a multi-year persecuted-church research project interviewing 700+ believers across approximately 72 countries. The Insanity of God: A True Story of Faith Resurrected (2013) — autobiography and persecuted-church missiology — is the foundational articulation; The Insanity of Obedience (2014) is the systematic missiology companion.
