1 Enoch 8:1

Study resource: not Scripture

R. H. Charles translation (1917) · public domain

And Azâzêl taught men to make swords, and knives, and shields, and breastplates, and made known to them the metals of the earth and the art of working them, and bracelets, and ornaments, and the use of antimony, and the beautifying of the eyelids, and all kinds of costly stones, and all colouring tinctures.

Azazel's Curriculum: Swords, Cosmetics, and Godlessness

Azazel teaches men to forge weapons and armor and to work metal, along with jewelry and eye-cosmetics; humanity grows godless and corrupt as a result. The chapter lists other Watchers by name, each credited with teaching a different forbidden art: enchantments, astrology, reading the clouds, the signs of sun and moon.

  • Leviticus 16:8 : The name Azazel also appears in Leviticus 16:8 for the scapegoat sent into the wilderness on the Day of Atonement: a shared name across two very different texts, not a claim that they describe the same figure.
  • Genesis 6:5 : The spread of godlessness described here stands beside Genesis 6:5's summary that "every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."
