1 Enoch 14:8

Study resource: not Scripture

R. H. Charles translation (1917) · public domain

And the vision was shown to me thus: Behold, in the vision clouds invited me and a mist summoned me, and the course of the stars and the lightnings sped and hastened me, and the winds in the vision caused me to fly and lifted me upward, and bore me into heaven.

The House of Crystal and Fire, and the One Enthroned Within

Enoch's dream carries him up into heaven, past a wall of crystal and fire into a great house of crystal and flame, and then into a second, still greater house whose floor and ceiling are pure fire. There he sees a lofty crystal throne with wheels like the shining sun, and "the Great Glory" seated upon it in raiment whiter than snow, surrounded by ten thousand times ten thousand and unapproachable in splendor. God calls Enoch forward by name to hear His word.

  • Daniel 7:9 : The throne "like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire," with a garment "white as snow," is the closest parallel in the canon to the throne and raiment Enoch describes here.
  • Ezekiel 1:26 : Ezekiel's vision of a throne of sapphire appearance above the fiery living creatures stands beside Enoch's crystal throne set amid flame.
  • Revelation 4:2 : John's vision of a throne set in heaven, with one seated upon it, belongs to the same tradition of throne-room visions this chapter draws on.
