The number 38

Slavery, bondage to sin

Thirty-eight is scripture's number of prolonged, low-point affliction, and the pattern is genuinely striking because it appears twice, centuries apart, at the same figure: Israel's remaining thirty-eight years of wandering, from Kadesh-barnea until the whole generation of fighting men had died under judgment for unbelief (Deuteronomy 2:14), and the man at the pool of Bethesda who had been disabled for thirty-eight years before Jesus healed him (John 5:5-9). Bullinger's Number in Scripture has no chapter on thirty-eight, so the pairing is not his observation, but it is a real, verifiable textual pattern rather than invented tradition. The label 'slavery, bondage to sin' (Ed F. Vallowe, Biblical Mathematics, 1998) fits the pattern loosely, since both cases describe prolonged, unrelieved affliction, though the phrase itself is later gloss, not scripture's own wording.

The mathematics

  1. 38 = 2 × 19.
  2. Thirty-eight is the magic constant of the magic hexagon — and that hexagon is unique. There is exactly one non-trivial magic hexagon in all of mathematics: nineteen cells holding the numbers one to nineteen, with all fifteen lines coming to thirty-eight. One shape, one solution, and no other size works at all.

The same number, in what He made

From conception to birth is thirty-eight weeks — 266 days. The familiar forty weeks is the same span counted from two weeks earlier, at the beginning of the cycle: one waiting, measured from two places.

Sources are named in the line itself. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.”
