The number 25

Grace upon grace, forgiveness

Bullinger's treatment of twenty-five is brief. Number in Scripture (ch. "Twenty-five") simply notes it as five squared, 5x5, and reads it as intensifying the grace he assigns to the number five wherever it appears, whether alone or as a factor within a larger number. He offers no scriptural illustration for twenty-five specifically. "Grace upon grace" is a reasonable extension of that squared reading, echoing the shape of John's own phrase "grace for grace" (John 1:16), though John is not describing the number twenty-five there. "Forgiveness" is a further extension beyond what Bullinger states. The underlying arithmetic, 5x5, is verifiable; the specific glosses built on it are interpretive layers, not claims Bullinger or Scripture make directly.

The mathematics

  1. 25 = 5², and the smallest square above one that is itself the sum of two squares: 3² + 4² = 5². The first Pythagorean triple lives here.
  2. Automorphic: 25² = 625, which ends in 25 — square it and it is still there.

What they have said about this number

Grace intensified — the square of five, so the essence of grace rather than a multiple of it.

Being the square of five (5 × 5), expresses the essence of the signification of five, i.e. grace, whether used alone or occurring as a factor in larger numbers.
