The number 144

Twelve twelves — the sealed people, the measured city

A hundred forty-four is twelve squared, and Scripture uses it only in Revelation's architecture of the twelve. The sealed are 144,000 — 'out of every tribe of the children of Israel,' twelve thousand from each named tribe (Revelation 7:4-8), seen again with the Lamb on mount Zion (Revelation 14:1-3). The New Jerusalem's wall measures 'a hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel' (Revelation 21:17) — the city that carries twelve gates, twelve foundations, and the names of both the tribes and the apostles.

First occurrence

Revelation 7:4

The number of the sealed: 144,000 out of every tribe of the children of Israel.

The pattern in Scripture

  • 12 × 12 — tribes and apostles woven through the New Jerusalem (Rev 21:12-14)
  • 12,000 sealed per tribe, twelve tribes named (Rev 7:5-8)
