Zechariah of Israel

14th King of Israel

753 BC

Father

Jeroboam II

Biography

Zechariah son of Jeroboam II was the fourth king of Jehu's dynasty, fulfilling exactly the promise God had made to Jehu that his sons would sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation. He continued in the sins of Jeroboam I's golden calves. After only six months, Shallum son of Jabesh conspired against him and struck him down before the people — a public assassination. His death marked the end of the only dynasty in northern Israel to reach four generations. From this point forward, the northern kingdom spiraled rapidly through a succession of short, violent reigns until the Assyrian destruction in 722 BC.

Spiritual Significance

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

None recorded beyond completing the prophesied four generations

Weaknesses

Continued Jeroboam's idolatry, no spiritual reform, reign ended in assassination

Lessons

God's promises — both of blessing and of judgment — are fulfilled with precision. The four-generation promise to Jehu was fulfilled exactly in Zechariah, and the northern kingdom's rapid collapse afterward shows what happens when dynasties are sustained by human violence rather than divine faithfulness.
